MISTO.CAFE / cafe
222 sq. m, Lutsk, 2024
misto.cafe is a cafe of social impact, opened in Lutsk in 2024 through the initiative of 100 co-founders. Our task was to create a space that embodies the slogan “Different people – one place” and serves as a third place for the city’s community. We drew inspiration from the cafe’s name(misto - city) and aimed to convey an atmosphere of openness, where every guest - with their own habits, perspectives, and rhythms - can find “their” table.
CHEESE BAKERY / cafe
196 sq.m, Lviv, 2022
Cheese Bakery is a café and patisserie in Lviv, located in a revitalized industrial area. Our challenge was to integrate the new venue into the space of a former factory while reflecting the signature style of Cheese Bakery. The concept behind the café was to create a future gallery - the interior was designed as a calm, neutral backdrop for rotating exhibitions of local art.
BROTERIA / bakery
115 sq.m, Odesa, 2023
Broteria is a bakery in Odesa that continues the concept of the wine bar Vinobroteria. Our task was to create a venue with its own character while maintaining a subtle visual connection to the already recognizable bar. The heart of the space is an open bakery kitchen: despite the compact size, the location had to supply baked goods for both itself and Vinobroteria. A glass wall allows guests to observe the bakers at work and the process of crafting bread.
In today’s highly competitive hospitality industry, interior design has moved beyond mere decoration. Especially in the hospitality industry, design plays a vital role in shaping first impressions, influencing how long guests stay, and ultimately determining business profitability. A successful design for cafe interiors ensures comfort, encourages return visits, and inspires customers to share their experience online — a form of free marketing that’s more powerful than ever.
Why it matters today
With shifting economic conditions and changing customer expectations, many business owners are now prioritizing thoughtful interior planning. A well-executed cafe design isn’t just about looks — it’s about adaptability, energy efficiency, and creating a welcoming environment for work, socializing, or quiet moments.
Cafés have evolved into multifunctional spaces. They are no longer just places for coffee and pastries. Increasingly, they serve as flexible venues for meetings, remote work, and community events. That’s why a well-planned design is a long-term investment in operational efficiency and brand success.

balbek bureau’s design principles
At balbek bureau, we believe that a great café interior emerges from the synergy of three core components: functionality, atmosphere, and uniqueness. Every project begins with deeply understanding the venue’s concept, target audience, and context.
Functional zoning
We plan for both operational logic and guest comfort. Every corner serves a specific role — from the entrance area to restrooms and back-of-house flow.
Light, acoustics, and scent
Details matter. Lighting sets the tone or highlights key design elements. Acoustics support comfortable conversations. A subtle scent adds depth to the guest experience.
Design as part of the brand
We craft interiors that tell a story. From furniture choices to wall finishes, every element aligns with the brand identity and helps reinforce a strong concept.
Case study: bringing concept to life
We create café interiors that operate on both a functional and emotional level. This example demonstrates how intentionally designing cafe spaces can foster emotional connection, support community values, and strengthen brand identity.
Before: A mid-size location with the ambition to become a socially impactful café with a transparent business model and the role of a “third place” — a space between home and work for the local community.
What we did: We developed an interior centered around openness, mobility, and diverse user scenarios. The space was divided into distinct day and evening zones, while features like a small stage, bar, lounge area, and branded merchandise elements supported the vision of a multifunctional public venue.
Outcome: misto.cafe became a local landmark — a space that successfully blends social responsibility, architectural clarity, and a strong visual identity. It’s an example of how thoughtful design for cafe spaces can foster human connection and community engagement.

Recommendations for café owners
Design for real people, not just for looks.
Understand your guests. Do they care more about prompt service, quietness, or a perfect Instagram photo? Your interior should reflect the real-life behaviors and expectations of your audience.
Involve an architect before you sign a lease.
Not every location supports every concept. Early architectural input can save you from costly mistakes during the design process.
Prioritize technical comfort.
Ventilation, acoustics, and efficient staff routing are non-negotiables. Addressing them from the start ensures your space functions properly — and helps control your overall cafe design cost.
Trust your architect — but stay involved.
Great spaces are born from dialogue. Ask questions, challenge assumptions, and collaborate. That’s how resilient, future-ready solutions emerge.
At balbek bureau, we believe every successful design of cafe starts with a conversation. Our best projects are always built on trust and co-creation.
